Jan 2 Liberia to Monteverde
Monteverde is about a 5 hour travel extravaganza south of Liberia. I had to take a chicken bus down to La Irma, which is a Y in the road. Then take a taxi 10 miles to a mountain town called Juntos. Then catch the only bus leaving at 10 am to Monteverde. NOTHING went as planned.
The notion that I had to rely on Chicken buses to make a 10am departure seemed rediculous to begin. I got up at 5am to start the whole process. The 6am bus from Liberia wasnt there at the terminal. I made the 730am bus but it stopped EVERYWHERE along the way. When the bus made it to La Irma, the driver looked at me to get off. I told him we were too late, that I will miss the 930am Juntos bus and I might as well go to Punta Arenas. He corrected me that it is a 10am bus and I still had time. So I bee-lined it to Juntas. Sure enough, it was a 10am bus!
LESSON: Always ask multiple people around me for important info. 1# I can get a consensus view which is better than a one off bad info view. #2 Everyone will know your situation now and alert you to any changes or important info.
The bus ride from Juntas to Monteverde is a picturesque steep one lane road into the mountains. One farmer had bags of concrete he loaded onto the bus. Another farmer brought other farm gear. That is why it is called the Chicken bus!
